We are discussing the book Suicide Excepted by Cyril Hare, published in 1939.
Mr. Dickinson, an elderly and boorish pessimist, apparently commits suicide at the third-rate hotel that was his ancestral home. The life insurance company refuses to pay, siting the suicide exception clause. The deceased’s son, daughter and her fiancé are dismayed, and set out to bring about a verdict of murder, and so inherit the insurance money.
Characterization is spot-on. The story is very well-plotted; and there is a surfeit of hotel guests with motives for murder. When Inspector Mallett of CID searches for the truth, he ultimately unravels a very clever and shocking triple solution.
Mystery Book Club
Come in, get cozy and enjoy a group discussion of books of mystery and suspense by famous and lesser known authors from the Golden Age of Mysteries. Meetings will be held every other month, usually on the 4th Wednesday of that month. We have been holding Hybrid meetings; you can join in-person or via zoom
Need a copy of the book? Please search our online catalog or our Overdrive ebook/audiobook collection to check the availability of this book. Special book group copies are also set aside roughly one month before the discussion and can be requested on a first come, first serve basis by emailing circ@fallschurchva.gov.
